The B-Movie Podcast: Star Wars-ish Deep Space Rescu-isms – Message from Space

A long time ago, in a Drive-In not so far Away…

Welcome to our Month long series of Star Wars inspired/ripped off films!  That’s right Ladies and Gents, in honor of Star Wars: The Last Jedi we got a month of double features, special guest and more!!!  We continue with two Star Wars riffs that are way off base in Deep Space Rescu-ism, Next up; Message from Space.

Circa 1978 Japan loooooooooooooved Star Wars.  They loved Star Wars so much that they made what they hoped was their own Star Wars in Message from Space. What was produced was so off base, so deranged, so not Star Wars you can’t even call it a Star Wars Rip off.  This is a film that’s pure joy because of how insane it is.  Making it crazier, Message from Space doesn’t know how insane it is.  The tip off for any B-Movie Geek should be Vic Morrow in the credits.  The last part of his career found Morrow doing some of the most insane (and insanely fun) work abroad.  Great White (The Jaws Rip off which we covered) and 1999: Bronx Warriors (The Warriors knock off film, which we also covered) both films we’ve covered here are slices of mania that need to be seen to be believed.  Add in a very committed Sonny Chiba into the mix and you got a Sci-Fi sukiyaki that’s about as delicious as they come.
