The B-Movie Podcast: Star Wars-ish Cops ‘n Robbers – Space Raiders
A long time ago, in a Drive-In not so far Away…
Welcome to our Month long series of Star Wars inspired/ripped off films! That’s right Ladies and Gents, in honor of Star Wars: The Last Jedi we got a month of double features, special guest and more!!! We continue with two Star Wars homages this time with Cops ‘n Robbers first up; Space Raiders.
This is a Roger Corman film. Battle Beyond the Stars is Corman trying to hit a home run. Space Raiders is Corman in his element cutting corners, reusing production assets (e.g. VFX and score but more on that in the pod itself) and relying on advertisings. It’s not to say that it’s a bad film it’s not. Space Raiders is a scrappy little sci-fi adventure film that has a kid going on an adventure with a bunch of Space Mercenaries. In spite of the corner-cutting of the production, the film still works and has one of the least annoying kids in filmdom (which considering how 99.9999999% of kid actors are terrible and shouldn’t be acting, is saying A LOT). Much of the film’s charms are because of this great cast. Think of this as the anti-Ice Pirates or to say that this is actually good low budget sci-fi trash.
