The B-Movie Podcast: Space Vampires & Scorned Mummies – Lifeforce
Did think that we’d be discussing another Tobe Hooper joint so soon did you? That’s just how we do it here at the B-Movie Podcast. This should be an interesting one as we’re talking two films that feel like they should be paired but have so many similarities in the stories they’re telling it’s almost shocking.
First up, Hooper’s magnum opus Cannon Film, Lifeforce. You know you’re in for a treat when the source material that your screenwriters are adapting is called Space Vampires. Yes, Space Vampires is the novel by Colin Wilson that created this lunatic fevered dream. The film cashing in on the Halley’s Comet craze frames the comet’s passing with an expedition toward the comet. Of course bad things happen when they come in contact with a ship filled with… you guested it space VAMPIRES! Mathilda May plays the lead female vampire and is every bit of naked as you have been told. Steve Railsback goes full HAM in an amazing sweaty loud performance where he gets all kissy-kissy with a very game Patrick Stewart. This is Cannon Films at their zaniest. Golan and Globus were never so wrong headed as they were here but the results thanks in large part to the O’Bannon screenplay and Hooper’s spot on direction.
