The B-Movie Podcast: Glamorous – Breakfast on Pluto (2005)
For this double feature we have a special guest; Fellow Film Dispenser staff writer Marie! We’re taking it back to the UK in the 1970’s and a tumultuous time where Glam Rock brought Gay Rights and Gender issues to the forefront.
Based on the darkly comedic novel by Patrick McCabe Breakfast on Pluto finds Neil Jordan going back to dealing with questions of gender and love. Where the Crying Game was built as a mystery, this film is built around Kitten (Murphy) and her search for love and acceptance. Jordan and McCabe always keep the humor in the forefront allowing for even the most brutal moments shine with humanity. IRA bombings, the Catholic Church, the search for an abandon mother, Glam Rock all play a part in this sprawling film. Anchored by a truly revelatory performance by Cillian Murphy, the film is along with The Butcher’s Boy and Michael Collins (both which are in line to be covered by the podcast at some point) stands as one of Jordan’s finest and under seen works.
